清水寺ってどんな寺？
京都にあるお寺で、大きな舞台が有名だよ
Kiyomizudera is a temple located in Kyoto, well known for the huge stage that it has.
清水寺は古都京都の文化遺産の一つとしてユネスコの世界遺産に登録されているんだ
Kiyomizudera is designated as a UNESCO world heritage site categorized as a Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.
毎年年末にその年を象徴する漢字一文字を、清水寺の住職が大きな紙に書くことでも有名だね
It's also know for an end-of-year event in which the chief priest writes one chinese charactor to symbolizes the year.
毎年期間限定でライトアップもされるよ
Every year, it is illuminated for a limited period of time too.
清水寺への行き方
京阪電車の清水五条駅が一番近いよ
Kiyomizu-gojo station on Keihan line is the closest station.
祇園四条駅から行くと、途中八坂神社なども見ることができるよ
If you go from Gion-shijo station, you can also see other sites like Yasaka shrine on the to Kiyomizu-dera.
清水坂にはいろいろなお土産物屋さんが並んでいるよ
There are many kinds of souvenir shops along Kiyomizu-zaka street.
試食もたくさんできるから、何も買わなくてもおなか一杯になりそうだね
And many of those would let you try some food samples, so you could even be full without buying anything.
清水坂につながる三年坂には京都の古い街並みが残っているよ
Sannen-zaka street which connects Kiyomizu-zaka street has old fashioned buildings and streets alongside it too.
二年坂にはスイーツのお店がたくさんあるんだ
There are many sweets shops along Ninenn-zaka street.
「目隠しの門」仁王門と三重塔
この門は仁王門といって、仁王像が中に立っているよ
This gate is called "Nioh-mon" and has statues of Nioh inside it.
この門は１５世紀に建てられたものなんだ
This gate was built in 15th century.
舞台から見ると、この門はちょうど京都御所の方角に建てられているんだ。
Looking at it from the stage, you can see that, this gate stands on the direction of the imperial palace.
天皇が住んでいる京都御所を見下ろさないように、ちょうど隠れる位置に建てられているんだよ。
It was built in this position so that people wouldn't be able to overlook the palace where the emperor was living in.
この三重塔は、日本では最大級のものなんだよ
This is one of the biggest three-storied pagodas in Japan.
京都・東山のシンボルといわれているよ
It is also dubbed as a symbol of Higashiyama, Kyoto.
清水の舞台
この舞台は、ご本尊である観音様に雅楽や能を奉納するためのものなんだ。
This stage of Kiyomizu-temple was built so that people can play Gagaku or Noh to dedicate them to Kannon, the principle object of worship at Kiyomizu-dera.
4階建てのビルと同じくらいの高さがあるよ
It's almost as tall as a four-storied buildings.
「清水の舞台から飛び降りる」という慣用句にもなっているよ
A common expression in japanese, "Jump down from the stage of Kiyomizu" comes from this stage.
昔、この舞台から飛び降りて死ななければ願いが叶って、もし死んでしまっても極楽浄土に行けると信じられていたんだ
In the past, it was believed that your wish would come true if you are still alive after jumping down from the stage and even if you die you can go to Gokuraku-jodo(the pure land paradise).
江戸時代の記録では、234人が飛び降りて、34人が亡くなったようだよ。
Records from Edo period shows that 234 people jumped and 34 people died.
音羽の滝
1000年以上わき続けている湧き水なんだ。
It is spring-water that has been flowing for more than 1000 years.
清水寺の名前の由来にもなっているんだ
The name of the temple, Kiyomizu-dera(Pure water temple), comes from this spring-water.
三筋の滝のうち、左が学業成就、真ん中が恋愛成就、右が延命長寿にご利益があるんだ
Among the three lines of spring-water, the left one gives you a good luck on studying, the middle one on love and relationships, and the right one is for long life.
